Black Tea Caravan (Andrews & Dunham)

Black Tea Caravan is part of the Series 3 set over at Andrews & Dunham Damn Fine Tea. This blended Lapsang Souchong is deep and rich, reminiscent of a nice warm bonfire or adventurous camping trip.

Just as anything Lapsang Souchong, this “Black Tea Caravan” from Andrews & Dunham Damn Fine Tea is pungent. Instantly reminding you of a bonfire out in the woods with your friends, or that camping trip you took in high school.

This teas’ leaves are short and black, with occasional gold tips mixed in. While Andrews & Dunham doesn’t specify which black teas are used, opting for a simple “blend of black teas” moniker, my guess has to be on Lapsang Souchong and either a Golden Monkey or an orthodox Golden Tip Assam.

The flavor for this tea is equally strong, and a good match with the aroma of the dry leaves. The brewed aroma is only mildly reminiscent of Lapsang Souchong. Instead it smells much more of the maltiness typical of an Assam.

The flavor is striking. Drying the tongue and infusing the palate with energy. The brew is smooth, not as harsh as expected, but the flavor remains striking.

I liked this tea quite a bit. Its flavor and aroma match well and it holds a few surprises. It would be great if you could purchase the Black Tea Caravan separate from the rest of the series 3 batch, but Andrews & Dunham doesn’t have it that way.

Regardless, $25 for three teas is a great deal. The other two are an Earl Grey and a Jasmine Green which I will review in the future.
