Organic Bai Hao (Long Fu)

This tea was provided to me as a gift from someone overseas. It took another friend from Taiwan to translate the packaging, but we’re pretty sure we got it right. This Bai Hao from Long Fu located in Yunnan China is a bit unique.

I’ve been unable to locate pricing for this tea, or the manufacturer’s website, so I sadly cannot provide you with that information like I usually do.

The leaves for this tea are fairly exquisite. The unique coiled white and green leaves provide a rather wonderful visual. The dry aroma isn’t very discernable though. Even across three tastings I didn’t note much scent to speak of.

This style of production remind me more of a Bi Lo Chun or a Yong Xi Huo Qing than a Bai Hao. Both Bi Lo Chun and Yong Xi Huo Qing are green teas and neither are made in Yunnan province.

This tea produces a beautiful bright gold liquor. The steeped aroma isn’t powerful but it is heavy and reminds me of boiled cabbage or brussels sprouts, but without the sweetness.

This tea is extremely astringent for a white tea. The ‘singe’ from the brew lasts a very long time as well. This overbearing astringency makes it difficult to capture a flavor profile.

I didn’t particularly enjoy this tea. Without a flavor profile to keep my palate entertained all that was there was the sting from the astringency so potent in this tea. While the brewed aroma was pleasant, the palate profile was not.

I cannot recommend this tea to anyone at this time. Perhaps I received a low quality batch. When I travel to China I will seek out this brand to give it one more shot.
